During our recent jaunt to Europe we took some time out from our mission of finding great beer to get on the other side of the fermenter and brew a great beer. With our friend Menno of De Molen in the lead and help from Berith and Håge of Närke we embarked on our first foray into brewing!

The product of this transatlantic collaboration is Kristina Augusta. A Russian Imperial Stout named after a badass Swedish queen. We couldn’t be more excited about the roasty, delicious fruit of our labor!

Cheers!

A few choice representative from the West Lakeview crew have left our cozy little Chicago home and hopped the pond for a short jaunt to the Netherlands. Our constant quest for great beer has brought us to the Borefts Beer Festival. It’s tough work but somebody’s gotta do it!

Organized and run by fantastic brewer and friend of the Shoppe Menno Olivier of De Molen, the Borefts Festival is in its fourth year and this year’s tap list is simply ridiculous. Check it out here.

If you are also in attendance and see us, come say “Hi!”

Cheers!

What could be better that pizza and beer? Nothing, especially when the pizza is from Piece Brewery and Pizzaria and the beer is from Firestone Walker Brewing Co..

Rob from Firestone Walker will be here tasting out Wookey Jack, an unfiltered black rye IPA and Pale 31 California Pale Ale.

As far as the pizza is concerned, we just couldn’t choose from all of the great options Piece offers so we asked for a little bit of help from our friends. Here’s what they came up with:

The Barnaby Struve (Three Floyds Brewing Co, Indiana) …? Toppings: Metaballs • Banana Peppers

The Preston Van Winkle (Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, Kentucky) Red: BBQ Sauce Toppings: Chicken • Bacon • Jalapeño

The David Walker (Firestone Walker Brewing Co, California) Plain: Generous amount of red sauce topped with garlic, extra parmesan and olive oil Toppings: Anchovy • Mushroom • Olives

The Matt Brynildson (Firestone Walker Brewing Co, California) Margherita (no, it’s not on the menu) olive oil • garlic • basil • fresh tomato • mozzarella • parmesan

The Mikkel Borg Bjergso (Mikkeller, Denmark) Red: BBQ Sauce Toppings: Italian Sausage • Bacon • Pepperoni • Meatballs • Chicken

Cheers!

Peter, Jim and Chad at The Great Taste of The Midwest.

West Lakeview Liquors was well represented at The Great Taste of the Midwest last weekend. Just look at these three happy and handsome gentlemen! I hope you had as much fun as they did.

Sebastian Sauer, brewer from Freigeist Bierkiltur, wrapped up his long trip to North America with stops at West Lakeview Liquors and Northdown Cafe and Taproom this week. Sebastian brought four beers with him for thirsty Chicagoans to try including Abraxxxas (a strong, smoked Berliner Weisse), Ottekolong Kolsch, Pimock Hefeweizen and Hoppeditz Doppel Sticke Altbier.

If you didn’t have a chance to come out to either event but you still want to get a taste of these delicious brews you’re in luck. They will be on tap at Northdown while supplies last and bottles will be available for purchase at West Lakeview Liquors in the near future.

Cheers!

On Thursday July 19th The Old Town School of Folk Music and Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce’s Square Roots Festival kicked off with Summer Brew. Ten breweries from Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin, including local Chicago breweries Half Acre, 5 Rabbit, Metropolitan and Finch’s, offered 15 different specially selected brews for attendees sample.

Food was available from local eateries The Fountain Head and The Grafton Pub.

Good times, good people, good food and good beer. What more could you want?

New Eagle Rare and Evan Williams barrels hand picked by Kristina, Anette, David & Jérôme have arrived to the store. All three of these are lighter bodied than our previous single barrels and make excellent Summer Bourbons. Come down and grab a bottle, or let us ship some to you.
